Using Styles

As an alternative to choosing fonts, font sizes, and text styles (like bold) individually, Word offers several predefined formatting styles. To apply a style to your text, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Home tab and then select the text that you want to format.

  2. Click the up/down arrows of the Styles scroll bar to scroll through the different styles available. Or click the More button to display a pulldown menu of all the Quick Formatting styles, as shown in Figure below.

Clicking the More button displays a menu of all available Quick Formatting styles.

  3. Move the mouse pointer over a style. Word displays what your text will look like if you choose this style.

  4. Click the style you want to use, such as Heading 1, Title, or Quote. Word formats your text.
For another way to use a style, click on the diagonal button that appears in the bottom-right corner of the Styles group. This will open a Styles window that displays a list of available styles. (You can click on the close box of the Styles window to make it go away when you are done using it.)
